Warning, this hot sauce is addictive. It is the only “hot sauce” you will ever need. Although it’s Chinese, I promise you will be putting it on more than just Asian dishes.

Ingredients

¾ cup vegetable oil

1/3 cup crushed red pepper flakes (or other dried chili)

¼ cup fermented soybeans, roughly chopped

2-3 tablespoons dried garlic, roughly chopped

1-2 teaspoons sugar

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons sesame seeds

¼ teaspoon MSG

Directions

  1. Heat ¾ cup of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the red pepper flakes, soybeans, and dried garlic. Cook for 3-5 minutes, to let the oil infuse with the aromatics and to allow them to crisp up. Remove from heat add the sugar, salt, sesame seeds, and MSG. Once it has cooled, taste and adjust seasonings, but be mindful that the flavours will continue to meld and intensify for the next 24 hours, so you might also want to taste it then.
